The Lewisburg Community Garden is an opportunity for those interested in gardening to begin growing on a small plot of land right here in the Lewisburg community. Individuals, groups and families are encouraged to purchase a 20 dollar plot of land to grow fresh, healthy, low cost produce for either individual use or to be distributed to the hot meal programs in the area. Individuals who do not wish to purchase a plot of land are still encouraged to volunteer as this opportunity provides a chance to spend time outside, enhance gardening skills, and provide the community with access to fresh local food.
The mission of the Community Garden is to educate students and community members about the personal and environmental benefits and techniques of home gardening, while participating in an activity that helps develop a sense of unity. The project also seeks to increase awareness of food insecurity and the need for nutritious options. Local gardens promote sustainable living, as they decrease the environmental detriments that are involved with the transportation required from consuming non-local foods. In addition, the local community garden provides individuals with the knowledge that the food they are consuming is grown the way they want it to be grown, while also deterring the environmental hazards associated with harmful pesticides and unsustainable big business agricultural practices.
